How overtime is paid in the UAE
Under Article 19 of UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 (Labour Law), the normal working day is 8 hours (48 hours a week). Overtime is limited to 2 hours a day, and is paid as follows:
- Normal overtime: hourly wage + at least 25% (125%).
- Night overtime between 10 pm and 4 am: hourly wage + at least 50% (150%), except for shift workers.
- Work on the rest day: a substitute rest day, or the hourly wage + at least 50% (150%).
The hourly wage here is the monthly salary ÷ 30 ÷ 8. For example, basic AED 4,800 gives AED 20 an hour; 10 hours of normal overtime = 10 × 20 × 1.25 = AED 250.
Senior managers and some other categories may be exempt from overtime rules, and working hours are reduced during Ramadan.
Based on UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 (Labour Law) for mainland private sector employees. Free zones with their own employment rules (such as DIFC and ADGM), government employees and domestic workers may have different rules.
